Unelected to the very end…

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Hi, yes it’s been a while [unfortunately a tooth problem has knocked me for six].

…and now I’m back.

Yes, it’s an interesting time through the UK elections and Eurozone challenges.  Over the next few weeks I aim to pick out some big and small points from these situations.

The first is a tiny point that brought a smile to my face. :) (more…)

Gordon Brown’s leadership

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Just a very short post.  People have asked why he keeps going when all around him might be viewed as falling apart.  Even a few weeks and months ago the calls were loud for him to go.  Yet he persists.  Admittedly it seems to be going through a quieter patch as we are still deep in recession.

Anyway, perhaps a little quote from Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’ would help:

[It is]“better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven.”

All the best, in wherever you feel you are at the moment!

Leadership, ownership and spam in the web

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

I haven’t posted for ages having had much problems with spam.  Even having upgraded to wordpress 2.8.4 it still arrives – over 100 emails daily.  What a drag.

If this is technology and the power of the web, I’d like to go back to a slide rule.

So where do all these spam messages come from?  Are they sent with intent, or remnants that are just out there floating around the web – ghosts in the machine that no-one is responsible for resolving?

Part of the challenge of the web is about leadership…where does that come from? What is the value system of the web?  Well in my very first post I suggested there can’t be one guiding philosophy and value system to all who use the web otherwise it would all be clean and clear, yet it is still an intriguing question, because there must be groups of sufficient size [communities of practice as the jargon goes] who make advances in the web technology and coding.  If so, is it not possible to develop code to ensure spam can’t happen?  My naivety in programming not withstanding – all computer language is rule based logic is it not [up to this point anyway], so spam must have some feature for which rules can be developed to negate it?  Okay there may be some knock on effects…but allowing spam is daft.

As to spam what is the value system of those that initiate them?  Is it subversion of the web, or mis-guided commercialism, or just mis-guided or malicious fooling around?

Any spammer who would care to enlighten me – that would be great!

Yours frustratedly, probably in a slightly scattered post,

David

An alternative take on human behaviour

Hi,

To distract you from the economic shenanigans and the revelations of tax avoidance schemes by large corporates, how about considering the other imaginative yet far more entertaining ways people behave.  I found this (more…)

Lender of last resort and emergency funds

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Hi, I came across this phrase, ‘lender of last resort’, when doing my little bits of research on economics and where countries get their money from.

It usually refers to some entity, such as the Federal Reserve Bank or Bank of England, who, in extreme circumstances step in to ensure that an organisation or institution doesn’t fold.  The reason it does this is mitigate possible damage to the economy.  Such damage is usually either depositors losing their monies [and the knock-on effects]; widespread panic (more…)

UK Government To Crack Down On Alcohol Crime

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Yes, an addendum, albeit from a Mar’08 article referred to on Scoop World [not the BBC for once!]:

Whilst crimes involving violence may have reduced over the evening and night time period, the evidence also points to increases in offences, including violent crimes, reported between 3am and 6am.

The ministerial statement from which this comes gives even more figures to add to those accessible from yesterday’s post.

Why the addendum? (more…)

Britain has a drink problem

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Wow! Another little twist of patterns and counter-intuitive thought [or not in the case of the latter].

Another BBC snippet sparked my attention today, as did a similar newspaper article yesterday though I was busy writing on other topics.

Welcome to the rat race!

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Saw this via a link on http://www.wealthbuildingworld.com/ and loved it!  Have fun…and note the key bit at the end – is the relationship described more collective or individualistic?

Cheers,
David

Long-lasting relationships, liberals and anarchy

Monday, July 21st, 2008

I mentioned social mechanisms for sustaining a longer-term relationship in the prior post.  There are, of course, more mechanisms, particularly those internal to the relationship: (more…)

The value of looking sideways at life

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Hi, just a short post on a situation that brought to mind both the value of new perspectives, and a big smile.

Yes, there is Edward de Bono’s well-known ‘lateral thinking’: “methods of thinking concerned with changing concepts and perception” [quote from Wikipedia on lateral thinking].  The techniques and ideas of which are usefully applied in problem solving.

In NLP, there’s a similar concept: ‘re-framing’.

Then there’s the natural human capability to view (more…)
